Shisha mirror embroidery: A contemporary approach

Summary
Shisha mirror embroidery is a needlework technique that involves stitching shisha (“little glass”) mirrors in a framework mesh. Developed in India three centuries ago, it can transform ordinary clothes, accessories, toys, and living interiors into sparkling, individualized creations. Jean Simpson shows how, without previous embroidery experience and with very little equipment, you can quickly learn to decorate with shisha mirrors. She provides step-by-step instructions for ten basic stitching procedures and describes different kinds of shisha mirrors, fabrics, threads, and equipment. You’ll see see the nearly infinite number of beautiful ways you can use mirrors with simple syles and fabrics, as well as with molas, and with Guatemalan, Mexican, and other ethnic fabrics. ( Shisha mirrors are machine-washable and dry-cleanable.) The author also shows how to embellish your work with ribons, beads, lace, or bells. Dozens of how-to pictures and photographs of finished products accompany the designs. If you would rather concentrate on stitches and colors than on design, the author provides several symmetrical design outlines that can be made as simple or elaborate as you wish. There’s a chapter for needlepoint fans and there’s even a section devoted to tassel making. A list of materials suppliers adds to the book’s usefulness as a complete guide to shisha mirror embroidery.
