European and National Identities in Britain and Italy: Maastricht on Television

by Rinella Cere

Summary

This comparative study seeks to investigate and explain what citizens learn about Europe through television news in Britain and Italy. Through analysis of elements such as the broadcasting industry's construction of a national audience and differing language and visual representations of a single event, the author (media studies, Sheffield Hallam U.) finds evidence for striking differences in Italian and British understandings of Europe, the European Union, and their own nation's role in the EU.
