The Escape

by Viola S. Winn

Summary

With the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, missionary Gardner Winn felt duty-bound to surrender to them to preserve national Christian friends from reprisals. His wife, Viola, elected to hide out in the jungles with her three tiny children rather than to submit them to the perils of a prison camp.

Thus began almost three years of heart-stopping adventures in the mountainous jungles - a mother's incredible struggles to keep her small boys and infant daughter safe. Sometimes without shelter, often on the move, the little group braved storms, disease, hunger, and loneliness - always aware that the enemy might have followed them into the mountains and that a child's nighttime cry could reveal their hiding place.

The Escape is an unforgettable adventure story, full of the wonder of God's unfailing care through interminable months of tension - climaxed by a stealthy trek to the coast and a thrilling submarine rescue.
