by Doris G. Bargen

Summary

In this pioneer study, Elkin's comedy is interpreted thematically and formally and placed in the context of contemporary American fiction. Through an analysis of the author's narrative techniques and characterization, his affinities to prominent literary movements such as Metafiction, Black Humor and American-Jewish fiction are determined. Elkin's protagonists are revealed as professional men of our time. Through the tension between the private fate of orphanhood and the public role of salesmanship, the dynamic of their modernity is acted out.
