Jeff Koons: Celebration

by Robert Rosenblum

Summary

As a self-appointed prophet of banality, Jeff Koons has fuelled debate over the very character of art. Koon's work deals with the commemorative aspects of our culture. The theme is "celebration" - ranging from religious festivals to children's birthday parties. Monumental renditions of helium balloons, balloon dogs, Easter eggs bedecked with ribbons and valentine heart-shaped necklaces are meticulously rendered in polished metals and synthetic marbles. This catalogue is published to coincide with the exhibition in New York's Guggenheim Museum SoHo in 1996.
