Police Ethics and the Jewish Tradition

by Stephen M. Passamaneck

Summary

Although the Jewish ethical principle of tiqqun 'olam , repairing the world, has been applied in many areas of social justice, it is rarely discussed with regard to modern law enforcement. Starting from an examination of the issue of motive as it relates to cases of unlawful conduct cited in the Talmud, Passamaneck (rabbinics, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles) argues a case for the relevance of divinely-inspired law to moral dilemmas encountered in police practices.
