Third World: Whence and Whither? Protective State versus Aggressive Market

by Wim F. Wertheim

Summary

Contains a substantive reappraisal of economic world history. Colonial and neo-colonial policies applied by the states of the 'North' were not intended to be emulated by the 'South', hut rather to hamper economic development of the Third World. Another source of delay of economic development could be an agrarian impasse, caused by the intensive cultivation of rice in large areas of Asia. In this connection the book also presents a fundamental reappraisal, based both on actual field research and in demographic evidence, of the policies pursued in-the People's Republic of China from 1950 till 1980. Publication of the present volume might be in time. In the early 1990's, after the fall of communism, there reigned a near universal acclamation of economic liberalism all over the world. Gradually, in the Western world strong reservations are arising due to the negative effects of the disappearance of state protection for significant parts of Western societies. The present work shows that the effects of that globalization of unrestricted capitalism upon Third World countries is still more catastrophic and that in those parts of the world state protection against the aggressive market is even more essential.
