The Mayor of Casterbridge

by Thomas Hardy

Summary

The story of a man haunted by a reckless decision that changes the path of his fortunes for ever.

Michael Henchard is travelling the dirt roads of Wessex in search of work along with his wife Susan and their baby daughter. One evening at a country fair, weighed down by failure and responsibility, he drunkenly sells his wife to a sailor for five guineas. Disgusted by his behaviour, Susan angrily picks up their daughter and leaves with the sailor to 'try my luck elsewhere'.

Many years later Susan and her daughter return, seeking Michael in Casterbridge, where he is now a rich and respected member of Wessex society. For Michael, however, this reunion will have disastrous consequences brought about by his inability to reconcile his new self with the errors of the past.

Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge is a powerful and tragic tale of a man perpetually at war with himself.
