Summary

Talt, fifteen, escapes from the drug lords who have forced him and others to "mule" high quality cocaine to rich clients in large American cities, and hides out from the drug lord's hitmen on his Grandfather Gilmore's swamp ranch. Coyotes are catching the old man's calves. Talt persuades Pa to get two wild burros, because Talt, while hiding out with his father in New Mexico, learned first hand, that they protected sheep much better than dogs. Talt bonds with the donkeys, trains them well. After a harrowing night watching over the herd, Talt meets Monique Staling, a wealthy, very pretty girl, rescues her dog, Lucky. The hitmen come, use to local thugs to try to capture Talt - by kidnapping Monique. But with raw courage, and with the aid of the fearless burros, Talt overcomes Monique's captors, saves her and her mother. Author George Harmon Smith, born in the Louisiana swamp country, won literary recognition with his first YA novel, BAYOU BOY, which won many top awards, and was made into a Walt Disney movie. He has also written several YA novels, five of which are in the process of being re-published He is the author of many soft cover novels, most, under various pseudonyms.
