Konrad

by Christine Nöstlinger

Summary

One day a mysterious package is delivered by mistake to Mrs. Bartolotti. Usually Mrs. Bartolotti likes surprises, but this one beats them all. The package contains Konrad, a seven-year-old boy who has been produced and educated in a factory. Konrad proves to be an ideal son - brilliant in school, helpful around the house, disgusted by swearing, polite, incapable of lying. It's no wonder that Konrad's schoolmates loathe him. And Mrs. Bartolotti, though thrilled to have a son, is worried about his programmed perfection. Konrad's attempts to adapt to the marvelously muddled real world, to please his bohemian mother and straight-laced step-father, will keep youngsters giggling at the same time it starts them thinking about family relations and social values.
A desperate situation arises when the factory director realizes that Konrad has been sent to the wrong family. His attempts to uproot Konrad from his new home must be foiled at all costs. A hilarious escape plan is devised in which Konrad must be taught how to misbehave so that the factory will not want him back.
