English Comic Characters

by J.B. Priestley

Summary

This is a little classic of its kind, a gem from 1925, JBP's sixth book --and a clear sign that he was a coming man in terms of the English literary scene. Strictly speaking the bibliograhies that refer to this volume as criticism have got it slightly wrong, it is more belles-lettres, with Priestley sharing common memories with the reader. He so obviously enjoyed writing this book, and that makes it enjoyable for the reader. Judith Cooks "The book is worth reading for the chapter 'The Illyrians' alone, a perceptive and delightful examination of the characters in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night." Both Charles Laughton and Ralph Richardson told Priestley how much they had enjoyed reading this book, and JBP remained proud of this little book for the rest of his life.
