Mothers in transition: A study of the changing life course

Summary
Mothers in Transition is a sociological study that explores the motivations, needs and expectations of women returning to education or paid work after childbearing. It analyzes changing patterns in American society particularly with regard to women's drive to overcome barriers and succeed. Motherhood is explored in terms of the decision-making power and constraints women associate with this role. Women "trying to do it all in today's society" will identify with the wisdom of the mothers in this book. "The author's portrait of the mothers--her Horatia Algers--is reassuring to me. To them I can only say, God Speed! At least some of them will beat the odds. Some may even change them. To all, the accolades due to anyone willing to participate in this revolution. And kudos to Ms. Eakins herself who has invested so much effort on their behalf and has shown so much concern for their success." Jessie Bernard
