Phenylpropanolamine: A Review

Summary
In the early 1980s, adverse reactions reports on phenylpropanolamine, available in over-the-counter cough/cold remedies and weight control remedies for the past 65 years, began to appear with increasing frequency. This text was developed from a comprehensive search of the published literature worldwide on the benefits, risks and controversy surrounding the medication. Each chapter addresses controversial topics such as the relationship of phenylpropanolamine to khat and Ma Huang, national differences in nomenclature conventions, the questionable chemical identity and analytical purity of certain products, the relationships among phenylpropanolamine, ephedrine and amphetamine, and more. Also examined are drug interactions, cardiovascular and central nervous system effects.
