Good Duke Humphrey

by Brenda Honeyman

Summary

After the death of Bedford, Humphrey of Gloucester was the sole surviving uncle of the boy king, Henry VI. It was a precarious position to be in, making him the target of envious men who wanted to undermine his popularity with the people. His wife was tried and condemned on a charge of witchcraft and his bastard son Arthur, arrested as a traitor. To the implacable enmity of his half-uncle, Cardinal Beaufort, was added that of the young Queen, Margaret of Anjou. As Humphrey entered a lonely old age, his chief comfort was in his illegitimate daughter, Antigone.
