Bourgeois et bras nus est un livre de vulgarisation, initialement publié dans la collection Idées de Gallimard (1973). Guérin met en lumière l’embryon d’une révolution prolétarienne menée par les sans-culottes pour une République réellement égalitaire, contre les chefs jacobins de la révolution bourgeoise, qui les utilisent, avant de les réprimer, et de succomber à leur tour au moment du 9 Thermidor (27 juillet 1794). Guérin rompt ainsi avec une longue tradition « robespierriste » de l’historiographie de la Révolution, et s’attire de la part des historiens communistes des critiques très violentes, sur lesquelles la présentation de Claude Guillon apporte d’utiles précisions.
